Kilchoan to Broadford
Today the weather was good for cycling northwards. The wind was negligible to begin with (and too light to keep away all midges) then gradually strengthened through the day, making long climbs on Skye noticeably easier.
A 6:50 start meant that there were seven miles completed before a vehicle passed in either direction, which on the single-track roads is helpful. What a contrast with the main road from Lochailort to Mallaig where a group of motorcyclists were speeding as if they were in a TT race, with noise to match!
With Tioram Cafe and later several cafes on Skye closed when I passed them today (Sunday), Kitty Rose Dyer’s baking in her "Moidart Honesty Shed" in Kinlochmoidart was especially welcome. The main stop was for a superb nut roast dinner at the Lochailort Inn.
There was time in Broadford to see briefly a couple of relatives before checking in at the campsite and, comfortingly, health concerns were allayed. Also today there have been several conversations about cycling and further possibilities for future trips. The stats of 75 miles with 5600 feet of ascent and 2200 active calories are satisfying. All in all, it has been a day to remember.
